Nsawam (E/R), June 19, GNA – Mr. Andrews Nyarko-Adu, Akuapem South District Chief Executive, has said the Assembly had initiated steps to resolve the numerous chieftaincy and land disputes in the area. He expressed concern about the high number of such disputes, saying they posed threats to the security of the district.
Speaking at the Assembly’s Second Ordinary meeting of the Second Session at Nsawam on Friday, Mr Nyarko-Adu said the District Security Committee was collaborating with the police to maintain law and order. He cited one such dispute at Nkyenekyene, saying it has made security in the area volatile, following threats of bloodbath by a faction opposed to the installation of a particular person as queen mother.
He said the Assembly was making effort to bring the factions together to help restore peace and stability in the area. Mr Nyarko-Adu cited another dispute at Kitase, saying it nearly degenerated into mayhem during the burial and funeral of the chief of the area and that more than 40 armed policemen had to be deployed to control the situation.
Justice Kingsley Yeboah, Presiding Member of the Assembly, announced that 13,000 people have registered under the national Health Insurance scheme in the district.
