Assembly steps up environmental sanitation efforts

The Offinso Municipal Assembly has intensified its efforts at promoting environmental sanitation amid the outbreak of cholera in parts of the country.

Tonnes of garbage in the various communities have been cleared and refuse containers placed at dump sites to make collection much easier.

Mr Baffour Kese-Amankwaa, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that about GH¢102.000.00 had been spent on the exercise.

This came through their share from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

Reporters of the Agency had visited the area under the Strengthening Transparency Accountability Responsiveness – (STAR) Ghana’s sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how government’s resources were helping to improve the quality of life of the people, particularly, the rural population.

The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability, and good local governance.

Mr Kese-Amankwaa said health and sanitation was a priority of the Assembly and it would stop at nothing to rid the municipality of filth.

They would combine public education and enforcement of the assembly’s bye-laws on environmental sanitation to achieve this, he said.

He said they were also focusing efforts on lighting up the communities to boost security.

This, he said, was being done with money from the District Development Fund (DDF).

The assembly had finished putting streetlights on the four-kilometre stretch Mehame-Ahenkro road, he said.

This has helped to end criminal activities and pedestrian knockdowns by vehicles, which used to be common in the area, he noted.
