Ashanti teachers give government ultimatum

Kumasi, Aug. 8, GNA – Teachers in the Ashanti Region have given the government up to the end of August 2005 to conclude all negotiations in respect of salary adjustments or they will advise themselves.

In a statement issued at the end of their 2nd quadrennial delegates conference in Kumasi and signed by Nana Twie Adjei-Baffour, Regional Secretary and Mr Augustine Frimpong, Regional Chairman of GNAT, the teachers urged the government to immediately stop its feet dragging on issues affecting them, especially the current salary negotiations with them.

The statement suggested that future salary negotiations with them be completed long before the end of each financial year so that inputs from the agreed salary levels could be factored into the ensuing year’s budget.

It called for the appropriate and prompt payment of all legitimate entitlements such as car maintenance and supervision allowances as well as transfer grants due to teachers.

The statement further called on the government to include teachers car loan schemes instituted for certain grade and categories of workers in other services of the economy.

It appealed to the government to effectively implement without further delay all the incentives and other allowances for teachers in deprived areas and the provision of decent accommodation as promised by the government over the years.
