Ashanti region: Newspaper vendors demonstrate

Newspaper distributors in the Ashanti Region have organised a protest against management of Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) over purported moves to drive them out of business.

The vendors refused to sell the Monday June 13 edition of the Daily Graphic in protest against a contract between the GCGL and Kessben Group of Companies. The said contract sublets distribution rights to Kessben, but the newsagents say the current arrangement will put them out of business.

Class FM’s Ashanti Regional correspondent, Aboagye Frank Jackson, who was following the story, reported that some of the newsdealers who spoke with him indicated that they did not know the details of the contract. However, when they visited one of the wholesale outlets at Adum, they were informed that everything was now in the hands of Kessben Group of Companies. They told the reporter that the company has started collecting monies from them.

They subsequently organised themselves to stage a protest to ask GCGL to intervene and prevent any business deals that will render them jobless.
