Asanteman Council of North America elects new officers

The Asanteman Council of North America (ACONA) elected new officers of its Secretariat at the 9th annual Asante Congress held on September 1-2, 2006 during the coronation of Nana Gyetua Acheampong and Nana Konadu Sempremo, the newly installed Asantefuohene and Asantefuohemaa, respectively of Atlanta, GA. The ceremonies were performed under the direction and chairmanship of Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem, Omanhene of Tepa Traditional Area and Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Ambassador to ACONA.

Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem who flew in from Ghana to attend the inaugural ceremonies and the Congress has since returned home.

ACONA is the representative body and the umbrella organization for all Asante Associations in North America. It represents the interest of its members, and provides oversight in matters related to the economic, social and cultural education of Asantes and Ghanaians in North America.

Mr. Rex Kofi Nyamekye Poku, a Dallas area resident, an elder of the Asanteman Association of Texas (D/FW), and an IT Executive was re-elected the Executive Secretary. Mr. Poku has served ACONA in many Executive positions including the Executive Secretary for the past three years.

Mr. Samuel Kwaku Agyeman Duah, a Washington area resident, a Professor at Bowie State University and an elder of Asante Association of Washington was elected Assistant Executive Secretary.

Mr. Kwasi Antwi Boasiako of the Asanteman Association of Chicago and Mid-West was elected to the position of Financial Secretary, while Rev. Kwabena Agyarkwa Boansi, the President of Asanteman Association of Colorado and a Denver area Insurance Agent was elected Treasurer.

The Congress also elected Okyeame Essah Mensah of the Asanteman Association of Houston Metro Area as its Public Relations Officer.

Each position will run through December 2010.

The entire membership of ACONA congratulates the Officers of the Secretariat on their appointments, and the new Asantefuohene, and Asantefuohemaa of Atlanta on their splendid installation.

The next meeting of ACONA will takes place in Toronto, Canada from October 6th through October 9th during the installation ceremonies of the Asantefuohene and Asantefuohemaa of Toronto
