Armed Security Men Following Rawlings Around

On Saturday, January 21, 2006 a group of men, identified as agents of Ghana’s National Security Agency, followed former President Jerry John Rawlings’ car around.

Acting on a tip off, the entire household of the former President evacuated his Ridge Residence en route to an undisclosed location. As soon as they set off, two cars with four men each fell in line behind them. A dark green Sunny Car with registration number GW 8325W and another ash Nissan Sunny with registration number GW8269V followed the Vehicle conveying the Former President.

Noticing these vehicles maintaining guarded distance from the Former President’s vehicle, Rawlings’ own security detail made a diversion and stopped at a mini-shop, dropping off one of them and parking their car a short distance away. The men in those two cars came along and entered the mini-shop looking around. One of them said ‘We have to finish the job today”.

At a nearby Customs Post, the Former Presidents security detail alerted Customs about the suspicious vehicles with men looking in their late 20’s.

Soon the vehicles reached the barrier and were searched, whilst the former president’s own security detail formed a protective cordon around him. Each of the suspicious men were carrying fully loaded pistols with AK 47’s in tow. When the apparent leader of the group was questioned, he claimed they were from the Francis Poku’s National Security Apparatus and made a call on his cell phone. Within seconds, the head of the Custom Officers picked up a call and said he had confirmation of the identification of the suspicious men and so gave back their weapons to them.
