The Ghana Armed Forces High Command and the Inspector-General of Police has resolved to take the necessary preventive security measures to defend the constitution and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
This was at a meeting between the two sides against the background of mounting political tension, according to a statement issued by the Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra. The meeting noted that there are concerns over a bloated voters’ register, unresolved issues of alleged registration of minors and lack of consensus on who is qualified to vote.
There are allegations of intentions to use “machomen” to intimidate voters and possible misuse of the airwaves to cause mischief and subvert the electoral process. The statement said the Armed Forces High Command and IGP decided to have an urgent meeting with the Council of State to discuss measures to maintain law and order.
They will also meet the flag-bearers of all the political parties as well as the Electoral Commission to discuss security-related issues concerning next Thursday’s vote.
