Apam (C/R), Oct. 4, GNA – The Chiefs and people of Apam have named a street in the town after Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive (DCE), in appreciation of his impressive performance since he was appointed to the position about 16 months ago. The Aidoo-Mensah Street was inaugurated at the weekend to coincide with the celebration of their annual Akomase Festival and the 25th anniversary of the installation of Nana Edu Effrim X as chief of Apam. Speaking at the function, Nana Effrim enumerated some of the achievements of the DCE, which included the renovation of the offices of the District Assembly, tarring of the forecourt of the Assembly, and the provision of street lights.
The chief said the perennial water problem facing the people of Apam and its environs now belonged to history, thanks to the efforts of Mr Aidoo-Mensah who is also the President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG). He said the DCE had also facilitated the re-tarring of the streets of the town and had effectively supervised the sale of premix fuel to fishermen which had generated unprecedented revenue of GHC 85,000 for the town in eight months.
“A town which does not honour its heroes and heroines is not worth dying for,” the chief stressed and urged the DCE to regard the honour as a token from his town’s men and women for what he had been doing for the town.
“Like Oliver Twist we shall continue to ask for more”, Nana Effrim said, and added that they hoped he would not deny them whenever the opportunity availed itself.
Mrs Ama Benyiwa-Doe, Central Regional Minister who inaugurated the street, commended Mr Aidoo-Mensah on his achievements and appealed to other chief executives in the Region to emulate the example of the DCE to make life better for their people.
The Regional Minister said elections were for development and added that if the people voted to place a government in power but did not get anything to enhance their living conditions, they would become disillusioned and probably turn against the government. She cautioned that President Mills’ Government would not sit down to see its functionaries using their positions to amass wealth at the expense of the people they were appointed to serve. Mr Aidoo-Mensah thanked the chiefs and the people for the honour done him and said they took him by surprise since he was not expecting anything of the sort. He assured them that he would do whatever it takes to improve standard of living of the people of the District.
