Apam fishermen and fishmongers commend government

Apam (C/R) Jan. 25, GNA – Fishermen and fishmongers in Apam have commended the government for not increasing the prices of pre-mix fuel and kerosene.

The Assistant Chief Fisherman at Apam, Opanyin Kow Nduamon, while praising the government for not increasing the price of the commodity, called for the increase in the supply of fishing inputs for fishermen.

He told the GNA in an interview that due to the high cost of the inputs including large size outboard motors a lot of the fishermen were now using of smaller ones and appealed to the government to reduce the prices in order to bring more relief to fishermen.

Egya Kofi Eyi of the Apam Co-operative Canoe Fishermen Society called for regular supply of pre-mixed fuel.

He said fishermen in the area had to travel to Kokrobite, Chorkor, Esi-yie, Ningo and Prampram to buy the produce when in short supply in Apam.

He suggested that two-tanker supply a week could reduce their difficulties in searching for the product.

Mr Isaac Joojo Quansah, a canoe owner, said even though pair trawling on the seas has stopped, some large fishing trawlers fish very close in shallow waters, sweeping the sea bed and deprives the local fishermen of their catch and also destroyed their nets.
