Anaemia cases on the increase in Sekyere West District

Mampong (Ash), April 10, GNA- Anaemia is on the increase in the Sekyere West District of Ashanti and this called for donation of blood for about 789 people at the Mampong District Hospital last year. Mr Jacob Amoah, the District Pharmacist, who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Asante-Mampong on Wednesday, said the trend would remain the same this year considering the number of reported cases at the Hospital.

He said 20 of those who donated blood at the hospital last year tested HIV positive.

Mr Amoah, who is also an HIV/AIDS advocate, said the hospital over the same period recorded 168 cases of HIV/AIDS out of which 100 of them were females.

He said this trend of affairs was very disturbing since recipients of blood transfusion risked being infected with the disease if care was not taken to carefully examine all blood donated. Mr Amoah asked Ghanaians to take balanced diets in order to reduce the risk of becoming anaemic.

He also urged the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) to change its campaign strategy, pointing out that most Ghanaians had not changed from their promiscuous sexual lifestyles.

The GAC, Mr Amoah said, should also bring together all splinter herbalists proclaiming to have preparations that could reverse the declining health status of people living with the disease.
