Amoateng Faces Fresh Charges In The US

The indicted MP for Nkoranza North, Eric Amoateng is facing yet another drug charge in the US court where he is awaiting trial for allegedly dealing in narcotic drugs. The superseding indictment is the third so far since his arrest and detention in November last year at the Brooklyn correctional centre. When the Eastern district court brought a second charge against the serving Nkoranza North MP, many observers anticipated a change from his earlier plea of not guilty to guilty. But the Hon. MP and his lawyers have remained resolved to put the onus on the authorities to prove him guilty.

Early this month, a third charge came indicting him of distributing a controlled narcotic substance of about a kilogram or more containing heroin. The offense was allegedly committed in or about May 2005, six months before the last which resulted in his arrest at the Staten Islands.

In March this year, the court announced a second charge from another act allegedly committed sometime in December 2003.

So far the court has constituted its jury and a date is yet to be announced for the case to take off. Mr. Amoateng’s accomplice Nii Okine has since changed his plea from not guilty to guilty and ready to go into plea bargaining with the authorities.

In the circumstance, Nii Okine, according to the prosecutors, would be used as a witness against his good friend, Eric Amoateng.

Both defendants have been denied bail and have remained in custody since November last year. A third accomplice, Gameli Kuwornu who used his facility to rent a store for the accused persons is ready to defend his action when the court begins trial.
