Alpha International, an evangelical mission has donated assorted items including towels, tooth brushes, toothpastes, shoes and Bibles to the James Camp Prison in Accra.
The Reverend Seth Baah Agyekum, Ghana Coordinator of Alpha International, noted that, the Ghana Prison Service needs transformational capacity building to improve conditions in correctional Centres.
Rev Agyekum challenged corporate Ghana, organizations and stakeholders to help improve prison conditions across the country.
He also commended the government, the Ministry of the Interior and the Controller General of Prisons for initiating projects aimed at transforming the prisons.
He said: “I particularly commend the Controller General of Ghana Prisons Service for setting up the transformational taskforce to address the issues raised by the UN special Rapporteur and the UK expert in the reports.
The projects were also to help reduce overcrowding in the prisons by funding the ‘justice for all programmes’ and also provide two new buses to transport inmates from Prisons to Courts.
Alpha International in Ghana organized a ten week Bible study course for 15 inmates who were later presented with certificates of participation.
Rev Father Selwyn Nii Adama Okai, Regional Chaplain of the Greater Accra Prison and Relations Manager of Alpha International assured the inmates that there is hope and better future for them.
He said the course has rejuvenated and changed the life of the prisoners, adding that, the James Camp prisons was the 1st to run the course and would be followed by James fort and the Akuse prisons.
Alpha International specializes in prison activities and hold conferences yearly on how to impact effectively into the lives of the prisoners.
