Aliu arrives in US to attend UN Assembly

New York, Sept. 20, GNA – Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, arrived in the US, on Sunday, to attend the 59th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.

The Vice President, who is being accompanied by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nana Addo-Dankwah Akufo-Addo will on Thursday, September 21, address the session, which brings together delegates from the 191 members of the world body.

The official opening ceremony is, however, on Tuesday, September 21. The General Assembly is the main deliberative organ of the UN, for multilateral discussions on the UN Charter and under the presidency of Mr Jean Ping, Gabonese Minister of Foreign Affairs and La Francophonie.

Issues on the agenda include: Sustaining International Peace and Security, Promoting International Political Cooperation and the Realisation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, Promoting Collaboration in Economic, Social, Humanitarian, Cultural, Education and Health.

While in the US, Vice President Mahama will participate in Ghana Expo 2004, which opens at the World Congress Centre, Georgia, Atlanta, from September 23 to 26.

The trade, investment and cultural exposition, which is a private sector initiative facilitated by the Government aims at exposing about 400 Ghanaian entrepreneurs and professionals to their American counterparts and to explore joint partnerships.

Products in textiles and garments, information technology, food and agriculture would be show-cased.

Asantehene Osei Tutu II and some renowned international personalities would attend the event, which would be climaxed with an awards ceremony and cultural festival.

The programme was pioneered in London, last October.
