Akufo-Addo chambers burgled

Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co, a renowned law firm situated at Adabraka, Accra, has been burgled.

The incident occurred around mid-day last Saturday, but the lawyers working at the chambers have said they are ruling out any motive behind the crime – be it political for now.

The burglary was detected by one of the senior lawyers, Akoto Ampaw, at about 8pm same day when he went to the office to prepare a brief for court the following week.

Three computer monitors together with their central processing units were all taken away by the burglars.

The lawyers, whose computers were affected were Akoto Ampaw, Kwaku Asirifi and Kwame Boafo Akuffo.

“This is not the first time we are being burgled. Even our old computers have been taken together with the new ones in the past,” Mr. Ampaw told DAILY GUIDE.

Narrating the incident, the senior practitioner said when he entered the main gate to the office on Saturday he realized that the door was already opened.

“Initially, I thought it was one of my colleagues who had used the place and left without closing the door properly so I moved to my office door and detected that it was not well locked as well,” he said.

According to him, he noticed that his computer had been removed adding, “I quickly moved back to re-examine the door and realized it has been forced open.

I then moved around the office and noticed that my colleagues’ computers have also been removed. That was all that was taken.”

Mr. Ampaw said a lady who lives near the office told them she saw a taxi parked in front of the place and two men moving in and out of the office, holding computers in an ‘assured manner’ but the eyewitness thought the men had been sent to work on the gadgets.

“From what went on, it was clear the people knew about our movements in the office,” Mr. Ampaw said adding, “We don’t want to make any speculation but it could also be some mischief beyond the value of the computers.”

Alex Quaynor, head of the chambers, said one of the lawyers, Kwame Akufo, had reported the incident to the Adabraka police saying, “It has been persistent and it is not something we are taking lightly.”

Kwaku Asirifi also said, “We are ordinary lawyers doing our work and I do not know why they continue to target us. We have complained severally to the police, but nothing has been done about it.”

The law firm, established by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2016 presidential candidate, and his partner, Dr Adu-Gyamfi, is considered one of the best legal practising firms in the country.

It has trained some of the best lawyers in the country.
