Akropong residents complain about frequent power outage

Wassa-Akropong (W/R), March 14, GNA – Frequent power outages have become a source of concern to residents of Wassa-Akropong, capital of the newly created Wassa-Amenfi East District, of the Western Region. As a result commercial and social activities of the people, particularly cold store operators, butchers, corn millers, hairdressers, tailors and dressmakers are often severely affected. Activities at both public and private institutions including the district assembly, the Wassa-Akropong Government Hospital and the District Education Office are frequently disrupted.

Many people prefer to send their sick relatives to either the Tarkwa or Dunkwa-on-Offin Government hospitals in spite of the long distances and the transportation costs involved. Residents also complained about the effects of there unannounced power cuts on electrical gadgets and appliances like deep freezers, refrigerators, television, sound systems and radio sets. Mr Akwasi Amankwa and Alhaji Bature Innusa, residents, told the Ghana News Agency at Wassa-Akropong that several appeals to the Electricity Company of Ghana to find lasting solution to the problem had not yielded results.

Unofficial sources told the GNA that one transformer at Bogoso supplies electricity to three other districts including Asankrangwa, Enchi and Wassa-Akropong and power had to be rationed because of the low capacity of the transformer. The people have therefore appealed to the ECG to provide Wassa-Akropong, which is fast growing in size and population, with a separate transformer to ensure constant supply of electricity to enhance socio-economic activities of the people.
