Akatsi-North District to expel of Fulani Herdsmen

The Akatsi North District Assembly of the Volta Region has vowed to expel Fulani herdsmen and their animals entering the area.

Mr. James Gunu, District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, said this when he commissioned two separate six-unit classroom blocks at Agormor-Agado and Afiadenyigba-Gborxoxome.

He said the issue of the herdsmen and their animals was gradually growing into a menace for the country, and the Assembly must be proactive to protect food crop farms, the mainstay of the people and human security.

The DCE presented 10 poly tanks for the storage of clean water to 10 schools, where the Assembly was funding its own School Feeding Program (SFP).

He said the people in the District were predominantly farmers whose farms were at times destroyed by the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.

He said those who invited herdsmen to settle on their land will be surcharged for any damage caused to any farm or harm to any farmer, including rape of women by such herdsmen.

Mr. Gunu said the Assembly had since its inception about four years ago, grouped cattle owners and local Fulani herdsmen into the Akatsi-North District Cattle Owners and Herdsmen Association for easy management but will not accept the itinerant herdsmen.

Mr. Gunu said the Assembly was “fast-tracking development in the young District” and has launched an operation ‘One Month One Project’ exercise to commission at least one completed project every month.

Madam Helen Adjoa Ntoso, Volta Regional Minister, said government was on course in meeting the hopes of Ghanaians, adding that educational infrastructural development and general improvement of the sector remained key on the agenda.

She said many were seeing and appreciating the good works of Government.

The Minister said a documentary on projects across all 25 districts of the Volta Region, showing government’s concern for the region, are being compiled.
