Kumasi, Sept. 9, GNA – The Asante Intellectuals Development Union of Ghana (AIDUG) has announced that it had set aside October 18th as “Peace Day” in the Ashanti Region.
The union said in view of this development, it would be organizing floats and peace walks as well as durbars during which some eminent politicians, opinion leaders, technocrats and traditional rulers would take turns to address the gathering on peace-related issues. Addressing a press conference in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr Stephen Amankwaa, spokesperson for the group said the day was being set aside in view of recent violence, vandalism and political conflicts that had plagued some areas of the country.
“We see it as a responsibility to sensitize the populace to be peace-loving and disciplined before, during and after the elections since Ghana had come a long way in consolidating its infant democracy,” he observed.
The spokesperson said participants in the floats and peace walks would be required to wear all white attire as a symbol of peace. Mr Amankwaa stated that to ensure a successful programme, the union was collaborating with some identifiable groups and stakeholders who would be expected to play varied roles. He said highlights of the peace messages to be delivered would be aired on various radio and television stations to get the message across to the people throughout the country. 09 Sept. 08
