AIDS to kill 120 daily by 2009 – Doctor

About 120 people will die daily from AIDS in the country by 2009 if the current rate of infection is not checked, Dr K.O. Antwi-Adjei, Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services has said.

AIDS patients would also occupy most hospital beds and deprive those suffering from other diseases from getting proper attention.

Dr Antwi-Adjei was speaking at this year’s annual Church Extension programme, or ‘Asempatre’ of the Sunyani District of the Presbyterian Church at Odomase, near Sunyani at the weekend.

Although there are enough signs about the reality of the disease, the lifestyles of many people suggest they do not believe in its existence, he said.

Dr Antwi-Adjei charged couples to be faithful to each other and advised the youth against pre-marital sex.

Dr Antwi-Adjei stressed the need to show love to people living with HIV/AIDS to enable them live longer.

An HIV carrier, identified only as Miss Perpetual held the congregation spellbound when she narrated how she contracted the disease from her husband after their wedding.

She called on society to support people living with HIV to eat good diet among other healthy practices to reduce the effects of the disease.

Miss Perpetual also advised would-be couples to test their HIV status before marriage “in order not to be overtaken by events”.

Rev. Kwabena Asare-Ayeh, Sunyani District Minister of the called on Christians to strive to change society through their life-styles.
