Ahwiaa residents infested with bilharzias

Ahwiaa (Ash), May 26, GNA – The prevalence of bilharzias and other water-borne diseases at Ahwiaa, a farming community in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, has crippled economic activities in the area. Parasites causing the disease are believed to have infested River Mankran, the only source of drinking water for the residents.

Plans are therefore far advanced for the construction of a borehole through self-help.

Pastor Kwasi Adu-Boahen, the unit committee chairman, said this at the inauguration of the local School Management Committee (SMC) at Ahwiaa on Tuesday.

He said the community has renovated two rented rooms to accommodate two teachers posted to the area while a permanent three-bedroom teachers’ living accommodation is under construction. Mr Adu-Boahen said the project is being financed through special levies and voluntary contributions while the district assembly donated 20 bags of cement.
