Agric Minister inaugurates dam for Fooshegu community

Tamale, April 2, GNA – Mr. Kwesi Ahwoi, Minister of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has commissioned a rehabilitated dam for the people of Fooshegu, a farming community near Tamale. The rehabilitation cost GHc44 million and was funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation (GTZ) under its food aid project. The project kicked-off in December last year involving some 15,000 workers, majority of them women, who shared over 65,000 workdays, using local materials, with remuneration of about GHC2.00 each. The project has so far worked in 19 dam sites, serving 64 communities and benefiting a total population of 76000 people. By the end of the programme in June this year, the project would have reached about 150,000 people around 30 sites. In his remarks, Mr. Ahwoi said the government was committed to ensuring food security and poverty reduction, especially in the rural communities. He said the government was committed to adding value to local produce by processing them in order to make them competitive in the international market. He appealed to the community to make maximum use of the dam and also take ownership of it.
