Agona West Schools to participate in National Sanitation Day

The Agona West Municipal Assembly has directed the Agona West Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to compel private and public basic schools to take active part in the fourth National Sanitation Day.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Samuel Oppong, their participation would go a long way to enhance the success of the national clean-up exercise.

Mr Oppong gave the directive when he presented 100 tables and chairs for teachers, to 20 public and private basic schools in the Municipality at Agona Swedru.

He said the school children would play pivotal roles to ensure clean environments.

He urged the GES Directorate, not to do anything that would discourage teachers from participating fully in the exercise, adding that the Municipal Assembly has taken giant steps to ensure that the National Sanitation Day was not sabotaged.

He said the Assembly decided to donate tables and chairs to private schools because the children in those institutions must enjoy part of the national cake.

The MCE called for policies and programmes that would ensure that private schools received learning materials from government to promote quality education.

He exhorted teachers to put in their best to change public perception that public schools deliberately put up abysmal performances at the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BEC) in recent years.

The MCE said the Assembly presented the chairs and tables out of a total of 280, and gave the assurance that the rest would soon be ready to help improve educational standards.

Mr Robert Mensah, Agona West Municipal Director of Education, charged the recipients to cultivate the culture of maintenance, to prolong the life span of the materials.

He disclosed that DFID, foreign donors in education, had withdrawn its support to GES in the provision of tables and chairs to schools, and said the presentation of the tables and chairs had come at an opportune time, and expressed the hope that it would promote quality education in the Municipality.
