Kwaman (C/R), June 10, GNA – The Chiefs and the people of the Agona Kwaman and Bobikuma have expressed disappointment about the way and manner the Bobikuma-Kwaman-Nyakrom road is being reconstructed and tarred.
The road, which is about 13 kilometres, was awarded on contract in 2000 but up till now not even half had been completed. Nana Opaaku Yeboah VI in a petition to the Central Regional Minister and the Minister for Transportation and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the first phase from Bobikuma to Kwaman, which was completed after three years, had developed pot holes and is narrow. He noted with concern that the portion from the Police Station to the Posuban at Upper Bobikuma was part of the first phase but had been abandoned by the contractor.
Nana Yeboah said the bitumen used for the second phase from Kwaman to Agona Nyakrom was of inferior quality and could not hold the gravels to cover it.
According to the Chief of Kwaman pointed out that the portion of the road, which was resurfaced about a month ago had started developing potholes.
Nana Yeboah stated that even though he was a layman in the construction, it was obvious that the contractor had done shoddy work. He stated that if the Ministry of Transportation and Central Regional Coordinating Council delayed to act, the road would not last even six months.
The Chief said since the project would be paid for with taxpayers’ money, he appealed to the supervising authorities to ensure quality job. Nana Yeboah warned that the people would continue to protest against the contractor and appealed to the Minister of Transportation either to terminate the contract because farmers could not send their produce to the marketing centres.
Two attempts by the GNA to contact the Managing Director of the company, Mr Kwamena Arhin, at Agona Swedru proved futile.
