Agona Swedru (C/R), April 8, GNA – The number of eligible voters in the Agona District of the Central region reduced by more than 1,268, provisional figures from last month registration exercise has revealed.
According to Mr Serebour Quaicoe, Agona district Electoral Officer said a total of 96,435 voters registered at the end of the 2004 exercise, as compared with 98,248 previously.
Mr Quaicoe, who was briefing members of the District Assembly at its first ordinary session on Tuesday at Swedru, attributed the reduction in the 2004 figures to the refusal by the people of Bontrase and surrounding villages to register this year. He said the Bontrase community, which has about 2,000 people, refused to register due to a boundary dispute between the Agona and Awutu-Effutu-Senya districts.
He said the eligibility of seven people, whose residency was in doubt, was challenged and complaint forms were duly filled and submitted to that effect. A total of 166 registration forms were spoilt during the exercise. Mr Quaicoe said 333 old forms were used to make up for shortages at some of the centres.
The Assembly commended the Electoral Officer and his staff for doing an “excellent” job during the exercise.
