Agbesi apologizes to Ashaiman assembly

Ashaiman, Feb 12, GNA – Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, NDC MP for Ashaiman constituency on Wednesday, apologized on behalf of his party for the misconduct of some of the party supporters in Ashaiman. The supporters attacked some key officials of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (AshMA) over alleged management of public toilets. Addressing a press conference, attended by some of the party members, the MP condemned the act, promising that investigations would be conducted to find out the causes.

On Tuesday morning, about 30 NDC members in Ashaiman besieged the (AshMA) and assaulted the Coordinating Director, Mr Kwamina Akwa. They also destroyed his spectacles and snatched his mobile phone. A security guard was also assaulted by the rioters who were said to be returning from a court hearing, a case filed by operators of all the 18 public toilets in Ashaiman, during the New Patriotic Party Administration against the NDC supporters, who have taken over management of the toilets.

Mr Agbesi however, explained that in 2000/2001 when the NPP gained power, some NPP functionaries forcibly took over the management of the toilets from private people perceived to be NDC members and formed a company “SANITES LIMITED”, operated them without rendering accounts to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) as should have been the procedure. This led to the loss of GH¢65,000.00 to the assembly and was written off as a bad debt. The MP called for investigations into the administration of the AshMA regarding allocation of land, open spaces for recreation and public parks. 12 Feb. 09
