Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has criticised the current state of Afrobeats, stating that the genre has lost its excitement due to a lack of innovation among artistes.
In a candid interview with Madame Joyce, the Wasted Eyes singer said fans around the world are no longer as thrilled by Afrobeats as they once were, blaming the decline on artistes prioritising financial gains over creativity.
“The genre isn’t exciting people anymore,” she said, noting that the global momentum Afrobeats once had is gradually fading.
Amaarae attributed the stagnation to a formulaic approach by artistes who, in her view, have become too comfortable with sticking to familiar sounds that guarantee commercial success.
“The moment they started making money, they didn’t want to experiment again,” she lamented.
The 31-year-old singer, known for her boundary-pushing sound and genre-blending style, pointed out that the obsession with replicating hits has resulted in a creative plateau that’s slowly turning audiences away.
According to her, Afrobeats can only regain its excitement if artistes are bold enough to break away from the norm and explore new musical territories.
