African swine fever spreads in five districts of Ashanti

Kumasi, Jan. 28, GNA- The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) has banned the movement and slaughter of pigs in the region with immediate effect.

This followed an outbreak of the African swine disease in five districts in the region including the Kumasi Metropolitan area. The other affected areas are Kwabre, Atwima, Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma and Afigya-Sekyere.

A statement signed by Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister and chairman of the RCC, on Tuesday said the ban was to prevent the spread of the disease to other parts of the region.

The statement directed all District Chief Executives, Regional Director of Food and Agriculture, Regional Director of Health Services, Regional Co-ordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Regional Police Commander to ensure that the ban was strictly enforced until further notice.
