The Organization of African Unity (OAU) had collected more than 33 million dollars as fresh contributions or arrears from its member states by April 15 this year.
This was disclosed in Harare by Senegal’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Papa Louis Fall, who is Chairman of the OAU Contributions Committee.
He said, however, that the OAU was still owed arrears estimated at more than 47 million dollars, as against 54 million during the same period last year.
In a report submitted to the Committee of Ambassadors at the 66th Ordinary Session of the OAU Council of Ministers, fall confirmed that 28 member countries owed no arrears as at April 15.
The paid up countries are Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt,Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Libya, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, Senegal, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Senegal paid and additional 50,000 US dollars in advance for the next financial year
According to the OAU Deputy Secretary General in charge of the Finance Department, Ahmad Haggag, Gabon had also cleared all of its arrears with a cheque for 721,986.60 U.S.dollars after the OAU Contributions Committee’s report had been made. PANA
