African Migrants Resident in the Bijlmer dialogues with the Police

The Pentecostal Council of Churches in Amsterdam last Friday 21 November,2008 organised a forum to address some of the pertinent issues affecting African migrants ,especially those who are undocumented at De Kandelaar in the Biljmer. The Programme dubbed “Yes , We Can be Partners” brought together representatves from Amsterdam-Amsterland Police ,the City Council,Religious leaders, Community leaders, the Media and the residents of Biljmer,South East Amsterdam.The programme started with a dinner. Prayers was said at the beginning of the Forum, Pastor Emmanuel Koney had the opportunity to talk about the importance of the programme, he said the forum was to promote communication and discussions between the police and the Biljmer community.Members of the panel were Mr.Leo Wilde, The programme Manager DIVERS Amsterdam -Amstelland , Madam Margot Snijdes the Police chief in charge of South East, Mr. Jude Kehla Wet hoouder Stadsdeel South East,Mr. Frank Van Han a lawyer , Madam Rian Ederveen who represented Stichting LOS and Mr. Isaac Acheampong also from the Stadsdeel. Residents had the opportunity to ask various questions affecting them, especially the harrassment of African migrants by some Police officers.

A Ghanaian woman complained about a recent police search for illegals at her residence.

A Nigerian migrant asked why the Police are not able to keep Notorious Criminals away from the community.Mr. Leo Wilde,talked about the effects of miscommunication and his personal experience as a Police Officer. He spoked at length about what he experiened in Ghana, La CoteD’vore, Nigeria and Curucao.He said the Amsterdam Police Force have been mandated to reduce crime and disoder and also to arrest offenders and bring them to justice. In responding to some of the questions and comments from the migrants , he apologise on behalf of the Amsterdam Police who have not performed their duty with the required standard and professionalism. He promised to investigate all the complaints as soon as possible.

Mr jude Kehla, also advised residents to respect the laws of the Netherlands. He said crime reduction and community safety can be achieved if the Police and the residents become real partners.The Master of ceremony of the programme was Lloyed Ferdinard.The closing prayer aws said by Pastor Koney. The Forum ended with a musical entertainment which was lead by brother JVC.
