Aflao border town celebrate Stars victory

Aflao (V/R), Feb. 4, GNA – The Aflao border town was again thrown into massive celebration for the most part of Sunday night by football fans following the Black Stars 2-1 quarterfinal victory over their archrivals the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the Ghana 2008 soccer tournament.

Streets and alleys were jammed with fans that drummed, sang and danced, while drivers of both private and commercial vehicles tooted their horns in support.

The celebration extended to the main Ghana-Togo frontier at Aflao where travellers in transit waved in appreciation of the Black Stars feat.

Pedestrians, drivers and motor riders, while celebrating, threw caution to the wind, with especially the riders performing dangerous antics with their bikes.

Mrs Amodey Adiolayi, a Nigerian resident at Aflao, told the GNA Sports that she was not so much disturbed about Nigeria’s defeat as victory for the Ghanaian team over her countrymen had long been on the wall looking at the performance of the two teams at the start of the tournament.

She, however, asked Ghanaians to be ready for a defeat next time they meet the Eagles. Prince Afolabi, another Nigerian, said the Eagles were a disappointment adding that any defeat by Ghana had always been a painful experience for all Nigerians.

During the celebrations, most of the fans cursed the referee for sending off John Mensah for an offence which they thought should have attracted a yellow card and also questioned the penalty he awarded to the Nigerians, which put them in the lead. 04 Feb. 08
