Tamale, March 24, GNA – Residents of Tamale Metropolis have been hit by acute water shortage as many people including students are seen daily carrying yellow gallons roaming in search of water. Some residents told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday that water had not flown through their taps for nearly a month. Meanwhile, other residents have accused the Ghana Water Company Limited of being responsible for the shortage, which they had described as artificial.
Madam Vida Abakwam, a resident at Kalpohin Estate, said she had been relying on water supply from commercial tanker drivers though very expensive. She said she had spent GH¢15.00 so far on water but that could not last her for even a month.
Hajia Fati, a resident at SSNIT Flats in Tamale, also lamented how she had been hustling on daily basis to get water for domestic use and said the situation had given advantage to the tanker suppliers to exploit residents.
Another complainant, Albert Futukpor, said he had been relying on some good Samaritans for water, but for days now, he does not know where to get water because his suppliers had also ran out of water. When the GNA contacted Nii Abey, the Communication Officer of the Ghana Water Company in the region, he attributed the problem to technical fault, which occurred because of a power fluctuation. He said the company was working hard to resolve the problem and indicated that some tanker water suppliers had been contacted to supply water to the various communities with the help of Assemblymen and women.
