Accra Sports Stadium Renovations Stall as NSA Awaits Funding

The National Sports Authority (NSA) is grappling with delays in completing the closed Independence Square Stand at the Accra Sports Stadium, according to Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The stand was initially shut down in March ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Qualifier against Chad due to safety concerns and ongoing renovations. However, fans were allowed access during the match, sparking criticism about the pace of progress.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Ampofo Ankrah admitted that funding remains a significant hurdle.

“There are challenges here that we must address. We are still waiting for the release of funds to complete one of the stands to allow it to be at its capacity,” he explained.

The NSA is not only focused on immediate renovations but is also assessing long-term improvements needed for sports venues nationwide. However, audits of prior contracts and works are still pending, complicating efforts to move forward.

“So far, the audits of those works are yet to be completed,” he said. “From what myself and my team have gone to evaluate and assess, it’s not looking good.”

The incomplete stand could pose issues for upcoming matches, with the Accra Sports Stadium likely to host the Black Stars in September when the World Cup Qualifiers resume. The NSA remains hopeful that funds will be released in time to complete the project before the next game.

The delay highlights broader challenges in sports infrastructure funding and management, casting doubt over Ghana’s readiness for high-profile events in the future.
