The Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority, Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sactekla, has issued a warning to road users, particularly drivers and riders, urging them to exercise caution, avoid excessive speeding, and help diminish the incidence of road accidents that tragically claim numerous lives.
In an interview on GIFTs FM’s morning show, Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sactekla observed that drivers hold a position of advantage on the roads due to the size of their vehicles, often using this advantage to intimidate other road users such as pedestrians and motorcyclists by engaging in overtaking, speeding, and other forms of inappropriate driving that disrupt the flow of traffic.
She emphasized that 90% of drivers are involved in speeding, a major contributor to road accidents, highlighting that crashes involving speeding vehicles result in greater damage and injury compared to those involving vehicles traveling at normal speeds. Consequently, drivers and riders must abstain from excessive speeding to mitigate road accidents and save lives.
She seized the moment to counsel pedestrians on the importance of vigilance, particularly when navigating street crossings, underscoring their heightened vulnerability on the roads. She stressed the necessity for attentiveness, advising them to survey their surroundings, left, right, front, and back prior to crossing, to avert the peril of being struck by speeding vehicles.
Moreover, she educated pedestrians on prudent road usage to avert potential mishaps attributable to drivers. She further advised that individuals jogging along roadsides should don reflective attire, refrain from keeping children too close to the roadside, and avoid distractions such as phone calls or loud music when crossing. She emphasized that those under the influence of alcohol should abstain from road use to prevent accidents.
