The Accra Psychiatric hospital has called for private sector support to ease the hospital’s burden in the delivery of quality health-care to Ghanaians.
The call was made after a visit to the hospital by the Minister of Health, Sherry Ayittey, revealed the hospital owed GHC3.2 million to suppliers of food and chemicals
In an interview with Citi News the administrator of the hospital, Dr. Agyeman Gyau, indicated that private sector participation would ease the burden of the hospital and enable to run the hospital effectively.
He added that from his observation, government has been the sole financier of the hospital’s operations with a little support from individuals.
According to him, since mental health-care was free, there is a need for stakeholders in the private sector to complement government’s efforts to improve the quality of mental health care delivery in the country.
“Mental health care is free and the burden cannot be on government alone. Although we get help from individuals we need the private sector to also invest and come to our aid,” he said.
He therefore appealed to the private sector to be engaged in the refurbishing of the hospital and assist the hospital in order for them to carry out their duties efficiently.
“If the private sector comes in, the situation will not be the same because things will greatly improve to the betterment of all,” he added.
