Accra mayor promises to rebuild burnt shops at PSM

Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuje, has promised to soon release funds to assist traders to rebuild stalls and kiosks consumed by Wednesday’s fire at the Pedestrian Shopping Mall at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Speaking to victims of Wednesday evening’s fire, and other traders, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss also cautioned the traders against cooking at the market.

According to him, this is one of the main causes of the fires that have gutted several markets across the country.

He also charged them to desist from illegal electrical connections in the market.

The Wednesday July 24 fire destroyed 8 containers and 14 kiosks, but the mayor also said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

Myjoyonline.com’s David Andoh who was at the market said the traders were happy with the mayor’s promise.

But before the mayor arrived most traders were agitating because personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and Police had locked the gates to the market to allow them gather evidence to facilitate investigations.

David Andoh said after the intervention of the mayor, the traders were given access to the market.

The Accra mayor, however, asked the traders to cooperate with the authorities to ascertain the cause of the fire.
