Kumasi, Oct 22, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Road Safety Committee recorded 1,981 accidents resulting in 452 deaths between January and September this year.
Chief Superintendent Augustine Gyening, Ashanti Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, said this at the quarterly meeting of the Regional Road Safety Committee in Kumasi on Thursday. He said most of the accidents were the result of minor mistakes by drivers.
Chief Superintendent Gyening stressed the need for station officers of transport unions to fill the manifest forms at all times to enable the Police to trace the records of passengers who might die through accidents.
He said the Regional Road Safety Committee had, since last year, organized in-service training courses for over 300 drivers. Mr Ofosu Mensah Gyeabour, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, attributed some of the accidents to speeding, wrongful overtaking, overloading, drunkenness and lack of maintenance and appealed to drivers and transport owners to avoid such practices.
Mr Emmanuel Norley, an Engineer of the Ghana Highways Authority, expressed concern about stealing of road signs and appealed to drivers and other road users to report such cases to the police.
