A centre to train Persons With Disabilities established at Akyem Akroso

Akyem Akroso, April 14, GNA – The management of Needy Elevation Crusaders, an NGO has established a centre to train Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in dress making, tailoring, Kente weaving and batik tie and dye at Akyem Akroso in the Birim Central Municipality. Thirteen PWDs made up of 11 women including two deaf and dumb and two men have been registered at the centre.

They would be trained in dress making and tailoring free of charge to become self-employed.

Mr Obeng Asare, an amputee and Executive Director of the NGO, speaking to Ghana News Agency at Akyem Akroso, said a GH¢10,000 structure was being constructed and purchase of needed materials for commencement of the tie and dye project.

He expressed appreciation to Ms Mariam Raymaxwell, a German philanthropist and Nkosohemaa of the town for rehabilitating the centre and providing sewing machines.

Mr Asare appealed to the assembly, Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda and churches in the area to assist in the training of the PWDs. He said the NGO had distributed more than 140 wheel chairs to some PWDs at Akuapem Mampong, Akyem Sekyere, Nkawkaw and Akyem Akroso within the past four years and 50 of them had been registered under the Birim Municipal Mutual Health Insurance Scheme.

Mr Asare said about 170 PWDs had so far been registered by the NGO in the municipality.

He appealed to the assembly, Department of Social Welfare and Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for assistance from the assembly’s disability fund and a vehicle to train PWDs in the area.
