Lecturer appeals to chiefs

Kumasi, Jan. 16, GNA – Mr. Akwasi Amakye Boateng, lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University and Technology, has appealed to chiefs and clan leaders to institute plans whereby part of monies used for expensive funerals and donations raised at funeral grounds would be used to support children of school going age in their communities. He said by so doing, brilliant but needy students could be maintained in the classroom as well as dropouts brought back to school to equip them for the future.

Mr Boateng said this at the climax of a free three-week Christmas vacation classes held at Asokore in the Sekyere East District. The three-week event was organised by Nana Dr. Susubiribi Krobea Asante, Omanhene of Asokore, and supported by the Asokore Sustainable Development Association, a youth developmental group. Mr Boateng, a Political Science lecturer, said the only legacy parents could bequeath their children was education, hence it was time they encouraged and promoted studying and learning among them. Mr Boateng pleaded with parents and landlords of the area to give teachers incentives in the form of financial support and free accommodation to motivate them to work harder. Nana Dr Asante congratulated the 18-member team of the youth group who volunteered to teach the children.

Debate and quiz competitions were organised for the children to test them for the three-week study period. Those in the upper primary also entertained the gathering with choreography and drama.
