Accra, Dec. 6, GNA – A recent study has revealed that most public schools in the Accra Metropolis lack toilet facilities, Mr John A.Y. Klinogo, Chairman Board of Trustees of National Partnership for Children’s Trust, said on Thursday.
He said visits to most of these schools showed that even where the facilities were available, they had either been broken down for years or had been shut down because of rising water bills which had become a headache for school authorities.
Mr Klinogo made these remarks when he commissioned a 10,000-GH cedi renovated toilet for the pupils of Nima Basic schools in Accra funded by the Poly Group of Companies, dealers in poly products and electrical appliances.
The project, in addition to the functional toilet facility, also provided sinks for hand washing for the about 1,200 pupils. He said: “I believe it is time Accra Metropolitan Assembly wakes up to its responsibilities in the area of health and sanitation in public schools in the metropolis.
“The time to put an end to the culture of waiting for calamities to strike before we act is now.” Mr Ashok Mohinani, Chief Executive Officer of Poly Group of companies, said this project was part of his company’s social responsibilities.
He stated further that he hoped other corporate bodies would follow his company’s footsteps to make schools in deprived areas have basic social facilities. 6 Dec. 07
