Asamankese, Oct. 30, GNA- Ten Junior High Schools in the West Akyem district scored zero percent in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). In 2005 and 2006, seven schools in the district scored zero percent in the examination.
Four schools scored 100 percent pass in this year’s examinations, two in 2006 and six in 2005.
Alarmed by the poor performances of schools in the district, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Kwabena Sintim-Aboagye on Tuesday held discussions with the District Education Oversight Committee to see how best to redress the situation. Four committees of five members each were constituted to visit schools regularly especially those performing abysmally. Mr Sintim-Aboagye expressed his worry about the situation and urged the committees to meet the Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), School Management Committees and teachers and do everything possible to improve the situation Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Sintim-Aboagye said the committee would pay regular visits to schools to monitor the performance of the teachers as well as the children’s attendance.
As an immediate step, headmasters of the ten schools would be “reshuffled” and their performance put under surveillance and if necessary transferred from the district.
The DCE said communities would be educated on the need to be actively involved in their children’s education. He advised parents to keep their children away from video centres, funerals, dances and other activities that hamper their educational advancement.
