A senior lecturer of the University of Ghana, Legon, Mr. Samuel Opoku has observed that the standard of reading in the country is very low, thus contributing to the dwindling fortunes of education in the country. “We have a poor reading culture which does not augur well for our educational system,” he added.
Mr. Opoku stated that one major cause is the poor public library system in the country. “Most of the public libraries are poorly stocked and the conditions in these libraries are not attractive for reading, he noted. The senior lecturer who spoke to the Point newspaper in an exclusive interview attributed the increase in the number of Ghanaians not reading, to poor parental guidance and substandard materials in the basic schools. He said because of this, the country is producing “illiterate graduates”.
