School kids to participate in international voting

Sekondi, Feb. 14, GNA – About 356,000 students and pupils of first and second cycle schools would participate in a global voting to elect outstanding personalities who have championed the cause of children this year.
Miss Akua Ansah-Eshon, National Coordinator of the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child (WCPRC), organisers of the global voting, told the GNA in an interview on Wednesday that members of Child Rights clubs would also take part in the voting from March 15 to March 27.
Miss Ansah-Eshon said unlike previous voting, this year’s programme would be organised in participating schools throughout the country. She said the candidates for the award are Dr. Cynthia Maung of Burma, Inderjit Khurana of India and Betty Makoni of Zimbabwe. Craig Kielburger of Canada won the 2006 WCPRC.
Miss Ansah-Eshon said, “At the age of 12, Craig founded Free The Children and he fights for young people’s rights to make their voices heard and to release children from poverty and violations of the rights of the child”.
She said patrons of WCPRC include Queen Silvia of Sweden, former President Nelson Mandela of South African and his wife, Graca Machel.
