School feeding programme launched at Bawku

Bawku, August 4, GNA – The school-feeding programme for over 5,000 pupils from seven basic schools in the Bawku Municipality has been launched at Bawku in the Upper East Region.

Launching it the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Boniface Gambilla, reiterated the government’s commitment to create a more conducive environment that would improve the human resource base of the country.

He said the nation was at the threshold of realising the potentials of its future leaders by giving all children the opportunity to be in school.

Mr Gambilla said the programme and other interventions were geared towards increasing school enrolment and restoring confidence in education.

He appealed to the food supervision committee and community members to be vigilant to prevent diversion of the food. The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Abdul-Rahman Gumah, said the programme was a laudable idea that should encourage parents to send their children to school and resist the temptation of withdrawing them from school for commercial activities.

He said the successful implementation of it rested on the food supervision committee and the community and warned that any one who tried to bring the programme into disrepute would not be spared. Mr Gumah expressed the hope that the programme would encourage local farmers to produce more to meet the increasing demands in order to reduce poverty among rural communities.

Mr Amadu Karim, a headteacher, called for better infrastructures to complement these laudable interventions from the government for a congenial atmosphere for effective teaching and learning and expressed their gratitude to government for the programme.
