Teacher steals “Akpeteshie”

Bawku (UER), June23, GNA – A Bawku Circuit court on Friday, bonded Stephen Achocbiik, a 32-year-old teacher to be of good behaviour for two years for allegedly stealing “Akpeteshie”, a local gin at a drinking bar. Achocbiik who pleaded guilty would in default serve two years imprisonment.

Police Inspector Andrews Yirenkyi, prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr Justice Alex Ofori Owusu, that on June 5, this year, the accused visited the complainant’s drinking bar at Gingande, a suburb of Bawku and requested for 2,000 cedis worth of “Akpeteshie”. He said after the accused had taken the drink relaxed for sometime at the bar.

Police Inspector Yirenkyi said the complainant, who was alone in the bar, went out and locked the counter but returned after some few minutes to find the accused inside the counter drinking more “Akpeteshie”. He said the complainant raised the alarm that attracted people to the scene, and they arrested the accused to the police station.

The prosecution said four sachets of “Alomo” bitters and 9,000 cedis were found on him during a search. The accused told the court that he was not aware of his actions at that moment but the presiding Judge said “Intoxication is no defence in law” and bonded him.
