Mampong (Ash), May 24, GNA – The Asante Mampong police has granted bail to the 17 students, who were arrested in connection with the recent clashes between students of the Asante Mampong campus of the University of Education, Winneba and Amaniampong Secondary School at Mampong, last Friday.
The bail is to enable the students to continue to write their terminal examinations.
Chief Superintendent Augustine Gyening, Asante Mampong Divisional Police Commander, who made this known, however, said the students were to report to the police daily until further notice. He was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after a review meeting of the security situation on the campuses of the two schools at Mampong on Monday.
The Director of Education for Sekyere West District, heads of the two schools and the security agencies attended the meeting.
Chief Superintendent Gyening said even though calm had returned to the campuses, it was agreed at the meeting that, the police maintained the dusk to dawn curfew imposed on the schools and their immediate environs until Friday, when the university students would had finished their examinations and closed for holidays.
He hinted that, the District Directorate of Education had set up a committee to enquire into the circumstances that led to the disturbances and come out with appropriate measures to stem future occurrences in the district.
The Divisional Commander, however, pointed out that, the police would continue with their investigations into the case to ensure that, those found culpable were brought to justice. It would be recalled that, the clashes between students from the two schools last Friday, led to the destruction of properties belonging to both schools.
The Mampong police arrested 17 of the students, who were said to be the ringleaders and placed them into custody. 24 May 06
