Bodwesango (Ash), March 25, GNA – Mr K.T. Hammond, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi-Asokwa and Deputy Minister of Energy, has expressed concern about the performance of some local road-building contractors in the country. He said whereas the government was committed to assist local contractors through capacity building to be able to undertake first class road construction, it appeared however that the contractors are not helping themselves.
“These local contractors are not reciprocating the government’s gesture of building their capacity to perform.” Mr Hammond expressed these concerns when he travelled on the eight-kilometre Asokwa-Bodwesango road on Wednesday to meet the people of Bodwesango as part of the tour of his constituency. He said the road was awarded on contract to Messrs A. Kannin Limited in August 2002 to complete its upgrading within nine months. “It appears now that the relationship between me and the contractor is no longer cordial”.
The MP said he promised his electorate during the 2004 election campaign that the road would be completed before the election but “now we do not know where we are heading to since the contractor had moved away all his machines.”
He said the road problem in his constituency appeared to be present in most parts of the country. Mr Hammond said the government was doing what it could to improve the road network in the country and called on all the local road-building contractors to support this healthy policy of the government.
“It is for the contractors to execute their projects to the expectation of the people. In this way, the mutuality between contractors and government will be engendered”, he said. 25 march 06
