Police look for users of poisonous chemicals for fishing

Ayerede (B/A) March 13, GNA – The police at Nkoranza in Brong Ahafo are looking for a group of people who used poisonous chemicals to catch fish in River Pru at Kontonso and Bredi Number One. The perpetrators, numbering about 13 were said to have killed a lot of the fish and a large python.

Mr. Alfred Boakye, secretary of the fire volunteer squad at Ayerede told Ghana News Agency the incident occurred at the weekend and all efforts made to apprehend the offenders had proved futile. He said a farmer informed the squad about the nefarious activities of the fishermen and the Assembly Member, Mr. Martin Adjei, also informed the District Chief Executive, Mr. James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, who called in the police. The perpetrators however, escaped before the police personnel arrived.

Mr. Boakye said the suspects allegedly beat up Nana Kwaku Poku, a farmer from Ayerede who confronted them but he managed to seize a cutlass, a pair of Wellington boots and a bicycle from them. River Pru, which is the source of drinking water for a number of farming communities along the Nkoranza-Ejura road is polluted with poisonous chemicals every dry season and several warnings from officials of Ghana National Fire Service have not deterred the people. Meanwhile, the Regent of Bredi Number One, Nana Ankomah Adjei, has given the assurance that the community leaders would cooperate with the Police to ensure the arrest of the offenders.
