Govt’s decision to pass Disability Bill hailed

Accra Sept. 7, GNA – The Disability and Needy Student Endowment Fund (DISNEFUND) of the University of Ghana has expressed joy at Government’s decision to pass the Disability Bill during the next session of Parliament.

DISNEFUND is a humanitarian initiative by students of the University of Ghana with the aim of complementing efforts of government and the University to provide affordable and higher education for the disabled as well as needy students.

A statement signed by Ms Abrefi Boakye-Amoateng, Project Director of DISNEFUND, on Wednesday said for almost two years the organisation had advocated the passing of the Disability Bill. It said the passage of the Bill would help to remove all barriers and obstacles that obscured the developmental efforts of people with disabilities.

It urged Parliament “to look thoroughly into the Disability Bill and expedite action to pass it into law during the next session.” “We also recommend that Government undertakes all necessary structural adjustments needed to make the lives of people with disabilities more comfortable.”

The statement urged the Government to consider the plight of the disabled in education especially those, who were able to make it to tertiary institutions to aid their learning process. “We will like to use this medium to ask for Braille machines, computer with voice software and other learning materials for the Balme Library for students with disability in the University of Ghana”.
