Ministry of Education, GES commended for quality education

Manso-Praso (W/R), Jan. 15, GNA – The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service have been commended for ensuring quality education and discipline in schools in the country even though there have been some disturbances recently at the tertiary level.

Ms Anna Ekua Saakwa, a Member of the Copenhagen City Council in Denmark, gave the commendation on Saturday at Manso-Praso in the Wassa East District of the Western region.

Ms Saakwa who is the Chief of Apraponso under the stool name, Nana Ekua Bri II, was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after swearing the oath allegiance to Nana Katakyire Okyenku II, Divisional Chief of the Wasa Fiase Traditional area She noted that the quality of a country’s human resources was very important since it determined its level of development. “For Ghana to achieve this kind of development, there is the need to condition the minds of the people, offer them quality knowledge through education to make them well structured to produce quality results,” Nana Ekua Bri said.

She advised Ghanaians to make the development of the child their personal agenda and said the development of education would be her priority. The traditional ruler stated that, “It is sad that many parents are shirking their responsibility and are not playing the desired complementary roles to ensure that children do not only survive but grow to fulfil their full potentials”.

“Some of them even find it more dignifying to spend huge sums of money on social activities than providing the little few things for the child’s education,” Nana Ekua Bri said.

She stressed the need for traditional authorities to abreast with the laws on the rights of the child to serve as “community watch” against violations and abuses.

Nana Ekua Bri noted that said the nation could not look on unconcerned while rape, abandonment of children, torture and other inhuman treatments were being meted out to innocent children. Issues like teenage pregnancy, child delinquency, single parenthood and Street-children impinge on the rights of the child. Nana Ekua Bri said those infringing on the rights of children should stop because they could be punished severely when found guilty by the courts.

Nana Okyenku administering the oath expressed concern about the numerous chieftaincy disputes in the area and appealed to the new chief to use her expertise to help the Traditional Council. He explained that the “solemn ceremony” signified her recognition and acceptance.

Divisional and sub-chiefs in the area attended the ceremony.
