The Assemblyman and young people in Sumburugu in Ghana’s Upper East Region have staged a protest following the deaths of two young men in a road accident on the Bolgatanga–Navrongo Highway on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The demonstration was organised to highlight concerns over road safety on the highway, particularly the lack of speed bumps at critical points and what residents describe as excessive speeding by motorists.
Residents said the two men were energetic members of the community. Their deaths have caused widespread grief in Sumburugu and renewed demands for immediate action to prevent further fatalities.
The protesters are calling on the government, relevant road authorities and opinion leaders to respond to the concerns raised by the community.
They want appropriate speed-control measures to be introduced, including speed bumps at locations identified as high-risk. Residents believe such measures could help curb speeding and improve protection for pedestrians and other road users.
The protest also serves as an appeal for authorities to make the safety of residents and commuters a priority. The Bolgatanga–Navrongo Highway is used by people travelling for their daily activities, and the community says urgent steps are needed to reduce the risks they face.
Residents are asking the relevant authorities to assess the condition and safety challenges along the road before more lives are lost. They have also appealed to the government, traditional leaders, political figures and other opinion leaders to support efforts to deliver a lasting solution.
The community hopes the deaths of the two young men will prompt swift action and lead to a safer Bolgatanga–Navrongo Highway for everyone who uses it.
As Sumburugu mourns, protesters say immediate attention to road safety is essential to prevent similar accidents and spare other families the pain of losing loved ones.
