Ethiopia’s Megech dam enters service during Mahama visit

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Gondar, Ethiopia, where he joined Prime Minister H.E. Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali to inaugurate the Megech Irrigation Development Project.

Mahama reached the historic city on Friday, October 23, for an official visit at the invitation of the Ethiopian prime minister. His trip comes ahead of the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, which will take place in Bahir Dar.

Soon after landing at Gondar Airport, Mahama joined Abiy Ahmed Ali to switch on the major dam and reservoir project, which is intended to expand agricultural production and improve water supplies across the region.

The development was launched 18 years ago but remained stalled until the prime minister revived it three years ago. It has now been completed.

The Megech Dam covers 870 hectares and has a storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres. Its irrigation network is expected to support 17,000 hectares of agricultural land, with the project designed to increase food security and agricultural productivity.

It will also provide a dependable source of clean, potable water for Gondar and nearby satellite towns.

Mahama praised the Government and people of Ethiopia for their resilience and commitment in completing the project. He said the infrastructure would deliver benefits for generations to come.

The Ghanaian president is due to travel to Bahir Dar on Saturday, where he will chair the 12th Tana High-Level Forum.

African leaders, policymakers and security experts attending the forum will examine major peace, governance and security challenges facing the continent.
